Set up your compliance settings

Settings → Compliance holds what your forms and receipts need to show. SmartChange shows what you enter on your forms and receipts. Your organization is responsible for its own filings and rules.

Only an Organization owner can change settings.

Check the Readiness panel

  1. Click the Settings gear in the top bar, then Compliance.
  2. Look at the Readiness panel on the right. It shows how many required items are done, for example "1 of 1 required complete".

For a 501(c)(3), the required item is the Legal disclaimer, which shows on every form and receipt. Two-factor is optional, and the panel marks it as worth turning on.

Check your organization type

Under Classification, your Organization type shows, for example 501(c)(3). Click Edit to change it.

Collect the employer's address

Under Contributor details, turn on Collect the employer's address to ask for the employer's mailing address alongside employer and occupation on every donation form. Contributors who mark themselves retired are never asked.

Check your 501(c)(3) registration line

Under Donation form & receipts, the 501(c)(3) registration + EIN line states that your organization is a registered 501(c)(3) and gives your EIN. It shows under every screen of your donation forms and on every receipt.

The line uses your Legal business name from Settings → General. If you leave that name blank, SmartChange uses your organization name. Make sure it matches your IRS paperwork exactly.

Add contribution rules and your privacy policy

  1. In Settings → Compliance, go to Donation form & receipts.
  2. Under Contribution rules, enter one rule per line.
  3. Under Privacy Policy, add your privacy policy. It is optional. Use it to tell contributors how you handle their information. If you run a text program, add your opt-out language here.

Contribution rules show under every screen of your donation forms. If you leave them blank, nonprofits show none, because the rules vary by jurisdiction.

Require two-factor authentication

Under Security, turn on Require two-factor authentication. Everyone on the organization must then have an authenticator app before they can open the workspace. Each person sets up their authenticator from their own account settings.

Not sure what rules apply to you? Check with your accountant or legal counsel.
